Trip Report
This was the inaugural tramp that started it all. The warmth of the fellowship of like-minded people in a cold hut in Mt Aspiring National Park in the winter seeded an idea. The idea … to continue tramping trips each year (and more) with others.
The 2010 Routeburn was an amazing trip and included … fun, laughter, stories, discussing life and theology around the hut table.
We stayed Friday night at the East Otago High house at Glenorchy before heading up into the mountains along the Routeburn track. Flats hut for lunch before heading up to the Falls Hut for the night.
As seen by the snow … which started falling as we arrived … it was also very cold. This was the tramp that I discovered that an australian sleeping bag rated at -10°C doesn’t work at -10°C in the New Zealand mountains. I bought a Macpac Down sleeping bag which (as of 2023) is still going well and warm.
Sunday morning was a “church service” together before heading up to the Lake Harris basin. The lake was frozen solid and several of our party walked on it. The snow was deep and powdery.
Back for lunch before heading down the track and back out.
