Another trip up to the Routeburn Falls Hut in August.
We stayed Friday night in Alexandra at Bruce and Julie Lietz’s … thanks!
It was overcast but pleasant as we departed the Routeburn shelter up to the falls hut together. Flats Hut for lunch before grunting up the track to the Falls Hut. What a contrast from 2 years prior when it was a winter white out!
On Sunday morning we took a jaunt up to the Harris Saddle where we found a bit more snow including a drift that we carefully crossed above the bluffs. We hoped to see the Hollyford Valley from the saddle but the clag never lifted for us unfortunately.
A quick lunch before the return back down the valley. Opposite the old day shelter Alf and I decided to bush bash down to the Routeburn from the track and the river was so low we were easily able to ford it without getting our feet too wet.
It’s amazing how different the Routeburn can be year in year out. Always something new to see.
The trip home was completed with a coffee stop at the Glenorchy pub.
