Trip Report
A May epic doing the Routeburn Track from the western side of the divide. This trip took us past Howden Hut into Mackenzie Hut for two nights and then another night at Howden Hut on the way out.
Highlights of the trip were:
- Staying in Te Anau for the first night
- The Earland Falls
- Arriving at Mackenzie Hut with hardly anybody there and then a massive group of students arriving from Mt Aspiring College in the dark because they couldn’t organise themselves that well.
- The cold and icey but spectacular day walk up to the top of the zigzag above Lake Mackenzie.
- The stay overnight at Howden Hut (since destroyed in a landslide) including a noisy tramper watching movies on his phone and sleeping on top of a “lilo” on the mattress squeaking all night long.
- Meeting “Evan the Ranger” on the track on the way in and out … two experiences for the price of one!
- A small group of us heading up to McKellor Saddle on the Caples Track.
Unfortunately I can’t find any photos from this tramp unfortunately.
