A May epic doing the amazing Heaphy Track.
Highlights of the trip were:
- Staying at Teapot Valley Christian Camp on the first night
- The absolutely stunning first day tramping up to Perry Saddle Hut … it was hot and almost summery with cicada’s in the trees and the hum of wasps.
- The Gouland Downs caves … exploring these needed more time
- The misty and moody and quite wet day between Saxon and James Mackay Hut. A french(?) solo tramper coming into the hut at James Mackay absolutely soaked and distraught because she needed to set up her tent in the rain and wind. We pretty much told her she had to stay in the hut rather than brave the storm.
- The long downhill to Heaphy Hut
- The kiwis (the birds not the New Zealander people) waking us up having a scrap outside the Heaphy Hut at 2am in the morning.
- Meeting Karen at the other end of the track before the forecast storm surges hit the beach.
- Our meal out at Greymouth.
