A planned weekend tramp up to the DoC Greenstone Hut in the stunning Greenstone Valley … last year we did the Upper Caples … so here is the Greenstone valley in the winter!
The Greenstone Hut is an easy valley trek up from the Greenstone carpark on the Glenorchy side of the divide.
About this Trip:
This is a self guided trip together … this means you sort your own transport, gear and food. The Greenstone Hut is a bookable DoC Hut that must be booked to stay at and costs $25 per night per adult and $12.50 per night per youth. Once you’ve registered your interest I’ll send you further details about how to pay.
Proposed itinerary:
Friday 8th August:
- Drive to the Greenstone Carpark where we start on the 12km tramp up the Greenstone River through the upper gorge. After the initial climb through the lower Greenstone gorge we travel along a fairly flat (“kiwi flat”) old benched stock trail in beech forest with scenic glimpses of the Greenstone river.
- A second group may depart the carpark at early evening to tramp up in the dark.
- We stay in the Greenstone Hut for the night.
Saturday 9th August:
- Head up the valley further to Steele Creek where we’ll head up the Steele Creek track if the weather is good. The Steele Creek track goes through a mossy forest before opening into an alpine valley near the Steele Creek Bivvy.
- For those desiring less exertion folk can stay in the hut playing cards, chatting, drinking copious amounts of hut tea and generally fellowship together.
Sunday 10th August:
- Hut church service before heading back out to the Greenstone carpark.
Accommodation in Queenstown is available before and after the tramp if required.

Please note: As we are using the public Greenstone Hut for our tramping trip – it is essential you book your own hut tickets as soon as possible to avoid missing out. There are only 20 bunks in this hut.
