(2018 Aspiring Tramp)
This trip involved a walk up to the recently renovated and rebuilt Aspiring Hut mid winter … a change from our regular Routeburn Winter Trip just to mix it up a bit. Aspiring Hut has amazing views of Mt Aspiring and the West Matukituki River.
Three groups departed (one mid Friday afternoon, one Friday night in the dark and another on Saturday morning) to tramp the 9km of fairly flat (“kiwi flat”) tramping through open farmland and river valley up the stunning West Matukituki River.
On Saturday afternoon we explored the upper West Matukituki River valley to Shovel and Pearl Flats.
We also spent a large amount of time in the hut playing cards, chatting, drinking copious amounts of hut tea and generally fellowship together.
On Sunday we had a hut church service before heading back out to Raspberry Flat carpark in snow showers.
